What Are the Effects of Meth Addiction?
Methamphetamine or meth is a very addictive drug and it has gone from being a drug that few people had heard of to one that makes headlines and is now in the public consciousness. It comes in large chunks that look like rocks. There is a powder that flakes off of the rocks and the powder resembles shards of glass. In color, meth can be white or it may have a yellow tint.
In the short term, people who use meth can experience side effects like: an increase in heart rate (and possibly a heart attack), weight loss, increase energy and insomnia. Initially, meth use may produce a brief rush that users say is very pleasurable, but after that met users often become very irritable or agitated. It is in this post-rush state that meth users can engage in the type or violent behavior that many associate with the use of methamphetamines.
Over time, meth users can go through hallucinations, strokes and damage to their internal organs, in particular the lungs and kidneys. Meth is very addictive and users need more and more to get high. While meth can cause weight loss on its own, this is often compounded by the fact that those who are addicted to meth may decided nto to eat (or sleep) because they aree so focused on feeding their addiction. As we mentioned, meth use not only causes hallucinations, it also causes extreme paranoia.
Many drugs are addictive, but meth is described as highly addictive. First, users get hooked on it rather quickly and second, a meth user can end withdrawal by using it again—this makes it very hard to break the cycle of meth use. And while using it again ends withdrawal, continued use does not guarantee a return to the high a meth user first experienced, but those who are hooked on meth continue to use it with the hopes of returning to the euphoria of that first high.
